PORTLAND — Schmidt’s Deodorant Co., which sold last year to European consumer products conglomerate Unilever, will close its Northeast Portland factory and lay off all 57 employees.
Employees will lose their jobs effective Oct. 31, according to a layoff notice filed with Oregon workforce officials. Schmidt’s said it will pay them for one additional week.
Unilever paid an unspecified sum for the seven-year-old Portland company last December. At the time, the conglomerate said Schmidt’s founders Jaime Schmidt and Michael Cammarata would remain involved but gave no further indication of its plans for the Portland operation.
