Fishing report, Sept. 6

The fall salmon season is open from Buoy 10 upstream to the Oregon/Washington Border above McNary Dam. An estimated 375,500 fall Chinook and 213,600 coho are expected to return to the Columbia River this fall.

White sturgeon retention is closed from Buoy 10 upstream to the Oregon/Washington Border above McNary Dam, but remains an option for catch-and-release fishing.

Walleye fishing is fair in the John Day Pool.

Steelhead retention is closed in the mainstem Columbia River, and is also closed in Drano Lake, the Wind River, and the White Salmon River.

Trout fishing continues to be good in high elevation lakes, and is further improving with the cooler temps.

Bass and panfish are still biting in the Columbia River and local lakes.

The Columbia River at the mouth of the Deschutes River reopens for fishing on Thursday.

Salmon/Steelhead

From Tongue Point to Bonneville Dam — Chinook fishing improved over the last weekend in the lower Columbia.

Aug 27-31: 111 bank anglers kept five adult chinook and released one. They released one steelhead.

Sept 1-2: 294 bank anglers kept 36 adult Chinook and two jacks, released two adult Chinook and three steelhead.

Cowlitz River — I-5 Bridge downstream: One bank angler had no catch. Above the I-5 Bridge: 18 bank rods kept one steelhead, 34 boats/98 rods kept 28 chinook, 18 steelhead and released 20 chinook, 13 jacks and six steelhead.

Wind River — Two boats/three rods released one chinook.

Drano Lake — 24 boats/54 rods kept 18 chinook, one coho and released two steelhead.

Klickitat River — 29 bank anglers kept six chinook and one jack.

White Salmon River — As of Tuesday, closed from the mouth to the county road bridge below the former location of the powerhouse until further notice.

Sturgeon

White sturgeon retention will be open on Sept. 15 and 22 from Wauna Powerlines upstream to Bonneville Dam. White sturgeon from 44-inches minimum to 50-inches maximum fork length may be retained. Daily limit one fish with an annual limit of two fish. Retention of green sturgeon is prohibited.

Troutdale Boats — Closed for retention. Weekend checking showed four sublegal and one legal white sturgeon released for two boats (six anglers).

Portland to Wauna Powerlines — Closed for retention. Weekend checking showed 12 sublegal sturgeon released for two boats (six anglers).

Bonneville Pool (Bonneville Dam upstream to The Dalles Dam)– Closed for retention.

Weekly checking showed 12 sublegal, one legal and seven oversize sturgeon released for two boats (six anglers).

The Dalles Pool (The Dalles Dam upstream to John Day Dam) — Closed for retention. Weekly checking showed three sublegal, three legal and four oversize sturgeon released for two boats (five anglers).

John Day Pool (John Day Dam upstream to McNary Dam) — Closed for retention. Weekly checking showed 31 sublegal, eight legal and six oversize sturgeon released for four boats (12 anglers).

Walleye

Troutdale — Weekend checking showed no catch for one boat (two anglers).

Bonneville Pool — Weekly checking showed four walleye kept, plus one walleye released for one boat (four anglers).

John Day Pool — Weekly checking showed 27 walleye kept, plus nine walleye released for 26 boats (64 anglers).
