Vancouvercenter moving forward on fourth tower

Plans are back in motion to build a fourth tower at Vancouvercenter, as the architect has scheduled a hearing with the city to discuss land-use permit issues.

At the hearing, Ankrom Mosian Architects will discuss the possibility of building a south tower on a vacant quadrant near the existing three-building Vancouvercenter, an apartment complex adjacent to Esther Short Park.

The tower would be six stories tall, featuring 116 residential units and approximately 2,000 square feet of retail space, according to the hearing’s agenda.

Last November, the potential for a fourth tower picked up steam again after years of stagnation on the project. The developer originally sought to create a 10-story tower with 194 units, but concerns over a new steel framing technique not allowed under city building codes further postponed the project.

Vancouvercenter currently includes 224 units — studios, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments — in two six- and seven-story residential buildings. Rent costs between $1,305 and $3,045. The 2 1/2 block property also includes an 11-story tower with space for offices, restaurants and retail.

The land-use hearing is on the books for 6 p.m. Sept. 18 at City Hall Council Chambers, 415 W. Sixth St.
