Weather Eye: Sunny skies continue, but we may see chance of rain later in week

The Labor Day weekend was superb no matter where you were in Washington. Mostly fair skies, even along the coastal beaches, welcomed visitors. Temperatures weren’t bad either, but running slightly below average. In fact, for the first three days of the month we are running 3.2 degrees below average. No rain however … yet.

Today we see highs back in the low 80s and on Wednesday in the mid- to upper 80s. Can we do one more 90-degree day? Late in the week a weather system moves through and we see increased chances of rain. Not much at this point, but if it holds together we could get a quarter-inch or so of much-needed precipitation.

September is a lazy month to me, weather-wise. Storms gather out in the Pacific trying to huff and puff their way inland but summer holds on, pushing back nature’s forces. But eventually by late September or early to mid-October our rainy season begins.

We still get subtle breaks between weather systems and classic autumn days with chilly overnight lows, blue skies and sunshine and just enough breeze to blow the drifting colorful autumn leaves around.

Meanwhile it is still early and harvest time is in full strength in local gardens. Many annual flowering plants are past their prime but still hang on in the ever so dwindling daylight hours.

I took a hike the other day through the forest. In such a grand surrounding on such a sunny day amidst the solemn quietness of the deep woods, nature was very much alive and preparing for the long days of winter weather. Are you?
