Weather Eye: Enjoy temperatures in high 70s, low 80s through end of this week

We are in the second day of autumn weather-wise, and it just plain feels like fall doesn’t it? Crisp northwest winds tempered the high of 75 degrees Saturday. More days like this on the way I’m sure.

I notice leaves on many trees turning yellow and red. Overnight lows have already dipped into the 40s and 30s in the county the past several days.

Think hot weather is over? Pretty much. That doesn’t mean we couldn’t get another 90-degree day, but with shorter hours of daylight and longer nights chances are dwindling.

August went into the record books as yet another dry and warm month. The average mean temperature was 70.8 degrees, 1.6 degrees above normal. Rain was light with only 0.09 of an inches, 0.68 of an inch below average. August and July are the driest months.

This week a northwest flow of air continues. This means highs in the 75-83-degree range today through the end of the week. We may have morning clouds or drizzle as weak weather systems rotate up and over the string of high pressure anchored off the coast.

You may have seen reports of the almanacs lately showing their idea of our winter weather. The Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts we will have a warm and wet winter. The Farmer’s Almanac calls for typical winter temperatures overall but also wet.

The overall accuracy of these publications which both claim secret formulas is only about 25 to 50 percent. We could use the wet part but hopefully it will be cold enough for the mountains to get a good snowpack and tease us a few times here in the lowlands.
