Weather Eye: Weather might provide small Halloween treat

I mentioned in my column the other day I thought we would see 1 to 2 inches of rain and maybe more with the incoming storms. And as you know, we did just that. From Oct. 25 when the rain began through 5 p.m. Monday we had 2.26 inches in the rain gauge here in Vancouver.

That pushed our monthly rainfall past expected averages and even with a brief break in the weather action today, more rain tonight and on Halloween will keep us on the wet side. But we had a nice two-week warm and dry period so I haven’t heard any complaints.

The next weather system arrives late tonight so it is possible the steady rain and the bulk of the showers will be over in the 5 to 9 p.m. time frame on Halloween. The little ones (and parents) may luck out this year but it will be close. The ground will be damp at least.

The next couple of storms will bring a little warmer air so freezing levels will be rising. The snow that fell at the upper ski areas will be saturated with warm rain and probably melt away. The peaks will stay nice and white.

So yes, the rainy season is upon us and the seven-day outlook calls for rain or showers most every day. With daylight savings time ending early Sunday we will really notice the earlier onset of darkness. With the lowering angle of the sun, clouds and rain, it will be the real start of our gloomy season.

But with the festive holidays in November and December with warm indoor cheer, that helps get us through the worst of it as our hours of daylight will be notably longer after New Year’s.

The active weather over the weekend caused a small tornado that moved across North Portland near Marine Drive and some rotation was seen on the Vancouver side of the river. More funnel clouds and possible tornadoes were sighted across Oregon on Monday.

Take good care and we will chat on the first day of November.
