The championship portion of the schedule has begun for collegiate cross country teams. Clark County runners are playing roles in helping teams chase titles.
Alexis Fuller, a senior from Union, placed seventh to help Boise State finish second at the Mountain West Championships on Friday in San Diego. Fuller finished the 6,000-meter race in 20:45, with her seventh-place finish netting first-team all-conference honors. Fuller’s time was 58 seconds faster than at last season’s conference championships, where she finished 22nd.
Boise State, ranked No. 2 in the national coach’s poll, finished two points behind 10-time champion New Mexico despite scoring 35 points. All five of Boise’s scoring runners placed in the top 10.
Emma Jenkins, a freshman from Camas, was part of a Washington State team that finished eighth at the Pac-12 Championships on Friday at Stanford. She finished 54th overall, third-fastest on the team, covering 6,000 meters in 21:26.
Elle Postma, a freshman from Camas, placed 44th overall as Seattle University placed seventh at the Western Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday in Seattle. She was the third-fastest Redhawk, covering 6,000 meters in 22:33.
On the men’s side, Silas Griffith, a sophomore from Ridgefield, placed seventh in the Atlantic Sun Championships Friday in New York, helping Lipscomb University of Nashville, Tenn., place third. The Atlantic Sun freshman of the year last season, he covered 8,000 meters in 25:32.
Yacine Guermali, a freshman from Camas, placed 29th at the West Coast Conference Championships on Friday in Provo, Utah. He was the third-fastest Gonzaga runner, covering 8,000 meters in 24:23 and helping the Bulldogs place third overall.
Kyle Peterson, a sophomore from Hockinson, was the third-fast Montana runner at the Big Sky Championships on Saturday in Sacramento, Calif. He placed 61st, covering 8,000 meters in 25:40 as Montana placed 10th as a team.
Boise State, Washington State and Gonzaga will all compete at the NCAA West Regional on Nov. 9 in Sacramento. The top two teams receive berths to the NCAA Championships Nov. 17 in Madison, Wis. Thirteen at-large berths are also available.
Volleyball
Olivia Coale, a senior from Skyview, had a season-high 19 digs in Washington State’s four-set win over Colorado on Friday. The Cougars, winners of four straight, are ranked No. 19 in the nation.
Brooke Van Sickle, a redshirt sophomore from Battle Ground, had a combined 10 kills and 12 digs in Oregon’s road wins over Arizona and Arizona State last week. The Ducks have won five of their last six and are ranked No. 16 in the nation.
Zoe McBride, a freshman from Prairie, had a combined 26 kills and 27 digs in Morgan State’s matches last weekend against Howard and Norfolk State.
Hannah Lord, a sophomore from Heritage, had 12 kills in Northwest University’s five-set loss to Southern Oregon on Saturday.
Men’s Soccer
Ben Stevenson, a senior from Prairie, made eight saves as The Evergreen State College concluded its regular season with a 1-1 draw against College of Idaho. The Geoducks (8-8-4 overall, 5-4-4 CCC) are the No. 6 seed in the Cascade Collegiate Conference playoffs and will face Rocky Mountain on Nov. 7.
Women’s Soccer
Taylor Hallquist, a senior from Columbia River, scored her fourth goal of the season in Western Washington’s 2-1 win Saturday over Montana State-Billings. The win clinched the regular-season title in the NCAA Division-II Great Northwest Athletic Conference for the No. 16-ranked Vikings (15-2-1, 10-1-1-). WWU opens the GNAC tournament Thursday against Simon Fraser.
Riley Smetzler, a junior from Ridgefield, led the Corban University defense to a pair of shutouts last weekend, beating Multnomah University 3-0 and Warner Pacific 1-0. The Warriors (9-8-0, 6-6-0) are the eighth seed in the Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament and play Eastern Oregon on Nov. 7.
