Weather Eye: Hail, thunder possible along with rain today

Now that we have an end to the lingering summerlike weather, we can move on and watch for incoming storms and snow in the mountains. Not that I didn’t like the warm and dry weather, but as the calendar is about to switch to November, we might as well tag along with the rainy season.

Another fall storm is over us today. Showers will linger into Monday to start the week. The steady rain began Saturday afternoon and was heavy at times. By 5 p.m., Vancouver had measured a third of an inch of rain. Colder air flows in today, and we could have a few frog stranglers, with possible street flooding thanks to tons of leaves clogging storm drains.

We’ll also have some sunshine between the showers. Hail and thunder are possible. Today will be an active weather day. From the beginning of the rain Saturday through Tuesday, I expect a good 1-2 inches of rain and more to fall in local rain gauges, more in some places because of the showery precipitation.

Showers continue off and on through Tuesday but with longer breaks. Halloween right now appears to be daunting for haunting with light rain or showers. It may be rather damp from 5 to 9 p.m.

The higher Cascades will have some snow finally between now and Tuesday, with maybe some wet snowflakes down to the passes. Timberline and Meadows should get 6-12 inches of snow, at least if the weather gods are in a good mood.

Great news for those of you anxious to go sledding. Mount Hood Ski Bowl purchased a snow-making machine that can produce snow even when the outside temperatures are above freezing. The tubing hill will be open whether there is snow, rain or sunshine for Thanksgiving weekend.

No worry about rainfall this month. Despite two weeks of dry weather, we will have above average rainfall for the month, with most of that coming in the last week of the month. Keep dry, and we will chat on Tuesday just before the great pumpkin arrives.
