The sacrifice of U.S. Army Pfc. Christopher Ian Walz, killed in action in 2009, will be honored on the ninth anniversary of his death at the Clark County War Memorial at the Fort Vancouver Barracks.
The Community Military Appreciation Committee is asking the Patriot Guard Riders and members of the community to stand in remembrance on Saturday. Walz was killed Oct. 27, 2009, in Arghandab Valley, Afghanistan.
The memorial is part of a series of events organized by the Community Military Appreciation Committee honoring local military members killed in action. It plans to hold such ceremonies every three years — on the anniversary of the military member’s death — and encourages participation from the family and community.
“This ceremony’s purpose is to provide a remembrance on the anniversary of his loss and to further the commitment by the Patriot Guard Riders, and our community, that our heroes will ‘Never Be Forgotten,'” according to a news release from the Community Military Appreciation Committee.
Attendees are encouraged to arrive around 11:30 a.m. at Fort Vancouver Way and McClellan Drive. The ceremony will commence at noon and last about half an hour.
