UPDATE: Devin Lamoine Brubaker pleaded guilty Nov. 19, 2018, in Clark County Superior Court to second-degree taking a motor vehicle without permission and was sentenced to five months in jail, court records show.
A man who allegedly harassed two teenage sisters and jumped into their vehicle Tuesday night at the Hazel Dell Safeway was arrested Wednesday night.
Devin Lamoine Brubaker, 27, appeared Thursday in Clark County Superior Court on suspicion of second-degree robbery, theft of a motor vehicle and second-degree vehicle prowling.
Brubaker was identified thanks to the public’s help, Clark County sheriff’s Sgt. Brent Waddell said in an email.
The sheriff’s office reported Wednesday morning that a man, later identified as Brubaker, confronted two sisters, 13 and 18 years old, around 10:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the grocery store at 408 N.E. 81st St.
According to an affidavit of probable cause, Brubaker “hit the front hood of the vehicle yelling for them to get out of the car before entering the (passenger’s) side of the vehicle.”
The younger sister ran to get help while the older sister tried to back the vehicle out of its parking spot with Brubaker still inside the car, deputies said.
Brubaker “attempted ripping the keys out of the ignition several times,” deputies said. He was also yelling at the teen at the time, according to the affidavit.
When he was unable to remove the keys, he exited the vehicle and fled the area, deputies said.
The sisters reportedly told authorities they thought Brubaker was going to kidnap or kill them.
In an interview with a deputy, Brubaker repeated that the girls were in “his stolen car,” the affidavit says. But when pressed for more information about his actions, he fell silent.
Judge Robert Lewis set Brubaker’s bail at $50,000 and scheduled an arraignment hearing for Nov. 11.
