Weather Eye: A simple forecast for you, and a link to more woolly bear info

The weather forecast this week is quite simple. Fair skies, sunshine and afternoon highs in the 70s. Overnight, the dry air mass will cause overnight lows to drop into the 30s, with frosty conditions in the wind-sheltered locations. Areas exposed to the east winds will remain in the 40s and 50s.

This nice weather is forecast to last all week. Might see some kind of a change next weekend, but that is a ways off. I saw the colorful leaves blowing off the trees Saturday and scurrying down sidewalks and roadways. At some point, someone will get a pile of neighborhood leaves in their yard. Don’t you love autumn?

Time seems to go by so quickly, and here it is the middle of the month. For the first 13 days of October, Vancouver has only seen 0.82 inch of rain, which is about a third of an inch below average. There was measurable rain on four days. Our average mean temperature is running at 55.5 degrees, which is 1.2 degrees below average. With upcoming highs in the 70s and lows in the 30s and 40s, we may just end up about average.

I don’t see much rain heading our way the remainder of the month, so we may end up way below average. It would be unusual, however, to get by the next two weeks without some rain. At least this is excellent pumpkin patch and corn maze weather.

After my story on the woolly bears, I had a few emails asking more questions. Of course, this is not a scientific experiment and mostly just for fun. The National Weather Service has a web link that tells all about it. Go to weather.gov/arx/woollybear.
