Junior quarterback Dalton Payne rushed for three touchdowns and passed for another as the Washougal Panthers rode a big third quarter and held on for a homecoming victory over the Monarchs in a 2A Greater St. Helens League contest at Fishback Stadium on Friday night.
The Panthers (4-3 overall, 2-2 2A GSHL) scored 12 of their 25 points in the third quarter as they outgained the Monarchs 101 yards to three. Payne’s three-yard run with 4:43 left in the third quarter put Washougal up for good.
Mark Morris (3-4, 1-3) came charging back in the fourth quarter, picking up a score on a 92-yard punt return by senior quarterback/wide receiver Dawson Fritz and another on a pass from junior quarterback Cole Busch to junior wide receiver Jack Shipley to make it 25-22 with 17 seconds left. However the onside kick was recovered by the Panthers to seal the game for Washougal.
The Panthers play host to top-ranked Hockinson on Friday, but may have to do it without two of their top receivers as juniors Jakob Davis and Julien Jones both left with injuries. Mark Morris tangles with its Longview rival RA Long on Friday.
