One is a true freshman starting for a traditional small-college powerhouse.
The other is a junior whose college football journey has been a winding one.
But both scored their first touchdowns for their respective programs on Saturday.
Tyler Bergeron is a starting defensive back for four-time national champion Linfield despite being a true freshman. He was a three-year letterwinner at Battle Ground and the team’s defensive player of the year as a senior.
Saturday, Bergeron returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown, the first score in Linfield’s 59-0 win over Willamette.
E’Lon Mack joined Eastern Oregon this season after originally beginning his collegiate career at Western Oregon, where joined in 2014 after winning all-state honors at Heritage. But after seeing limited action at Western and a hiatus from football, he transferred across the state.
Saturday, Mack caught a 58-yard touchdown pass in a 58-24 win over Montana State-Northern, his first for the Mountaineers.
