Fishing report, Oct. 4

White sturgeon retention is closed from Buoy 10 at the Columbia River mouth upstream to the Oregon/Washington Border above McNary Dam, but remains an option for catch-and-release fishing.

Walleye fishing is fair in Bonneville and John Day pools.

Coho salmon are entering the Columbia River tributaries, although low water and poor returns are hampering the fishing.

Warm water fisheries continue to produce panfish and bass.

Salmon/Steelhead

The Columbia River Mainstem from the Buoy 10 line upstream to the Highway 395 Bridge at Pasco is closed to angling for and retention of salmon and steelhead.

Cowlitz River — I-5 Bridge downstream: 25 bank rods kept nine coho jacks and released one coho jack. Fourteen boats/33 rods kept eight coho, 25 coho jacks, one steelhead and released 15 chinook, one chinook jack, three coho, six coho jacks and one steelhead.

Above the I-5 Bridge: 41 bank rods released 12 chinook and one steelhead. Five boats/13 rods kept one steelhead and released three chinook.

Kalama River — 10 bank anglers had no catch. Two boats/five rods kept four steelhead and released one steelhead.

Lewis River — 69 bank anglers kept one chinook jack, two coho, one coho jack and released five chinook, three coho and one coho jack. Fifteen boats/39 rods kept four chinook and released 19 chinook, nine chinook jacks, one coho and one coho jack.

Drano Lake — 15 bank anglers released one steelhead; 91 boats/231 rods kept 78 chinook, 33 chinook jacks, 10 coho, two coho jacks and released three chinook, three coho and five steelhead.

Klickitat River — 97 bank anglers kept 51 chinook and 16 chinook jacks.

Sturgeon

All areas closed to retention.

Bonneville Pool — Weekly checking showed four sublegal and six oversize sturgeon released for one boat (two anglers).

The Dalles Pool — Weekly checking showed 18 sublegal and one oversize sturgeon released for one boat (three anglers).

John Day Pool — Weekly checking showed two sublegal sturgeon released for three bank anglers.

Walleye

Bonneville Pool — Weekly checking showed one walleye kept, plus one walleye released for one boat (one angler).

John Day Pool — Weekly checking showed 10 walleye kept for six bank anglers; and three walleye kept for two boats (three anglers).

Tributary closures

Cowlitz River — Closed for Chinook retention from the mouth to the Barrier Dam including all lower Cowlitz tributaries, except the Toutle River. Until further notice, the closed waters section below the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery Barrier Dam is 400′, at the posted markers.

Washougal River, including Camas Slough — Closed for Chinook retention from the mouth to the bridge at Salmon Falls.

Wind River — from the mouth to 400 feet below Shepherd Falls, closed for steelhead retention and closed to night fishing.
