Weather Eye: Cool temperatures with light rain to follow October’s mild start

October got off to a mild start Monday with afternoon temperatures in the low 70s. As of late afternoon, there was no measurable precipitation in in Vancouver. It was raining in Southern Oregon and in points north of Clark County.

We will see light rain or showers and then clearing Thursday, with overnight lows in the 30s and 40s around the county. Computer models show it to be rainy and cool Friday with highs in the upper 50s.

We get a break over the weekend, but it appears the fall pattern is changing. We could see systems coming at us every day or two next week. Meanwhile, colorful leaves are beginning to tumble down on the streets.

Roads will have a soapy residue and the thirsty earth will soak up nature’s bath. Kids will splash through puddles on the way home from school. Adults will dash between the showers, umbrella in hand.

Gardens will wither as harvest ends, and thoughts of summer will linger in the minds of many as others look ahead toward winter’s chill.

Although our fall rains usually begin in October, we also usually have a week or so of Indian summer where the days are hazy and warm, the nights still and quiet. A brief respite before we bundle up for months on end and endure the rain, snow, sleet and winds that winter months bring.

I can handle a bit of rain, sitting cozy in front of the fireplace, listening to the symphony of raindrops sliding through the downspouts and out the drain.

Enjoy.
