Weather Eye: After Friday storm, cold, dry weather should be arriving

Today we get a brief break in the weather before one last storm arrives Friday for a gray, damp day. Some showers may linger early on Saturday then a cold and dry weather pattern sets up. As of 4 p.m. Wednesday here in Vancouver we were still running about 3 inches below the monthly average on the rainfall. I expect we’ll get a half-inch or better Friday before things dry out. That would still leave us way below average by nearly 3 inches.

As December arrives Saturday the temperature will be on a downward trend with highs next week in the 40- to 45-degree range and freezing overnight. We will also have that east wind and chill factors to consider. Cold air from Canada will be slipping by to our east but some of that cold air will settle in the Columbia Basin and feed cold air through the Gorge. Winter arrives!

Meanwhile, Tuesday was an active weather day, with scattered thundershowers and hail. It was like November was trying to make up for lost time with rain, thunder, lightning and hail.

With that, I want to share a poem written by my 13-year-old granddaughter Ocean O’Campo of Felida. Her reflections of the latest weather.

“As the raindrops drip down the window pane, I wonder to myself, why does it rain? And then I look above to the mighty clouds, the lightning booming, the thunder loud. Suddenly, I’m no longer at home, but in the woods, a place I’ve never known. I feel the howling wind barely scratching my fingertips, I wonder, why can’t it always be like this? The rain pouring down, soaking my hair, the thunder roaring, like the cry of a bear. It’s a thrilling experience, and I begin to wonder, why did I ever favor summer?”

Great words of prose to ponder and I can visualize her feelings of active weather filling our skies.

As it cools down next week the storm track will be to our south, but we always watch for overriding moist air streaming up over us with those chilly east winds. Snowflakes? Maybe winter will give us a tease.
