Ridgefield — Union Ridge Elementary School students are learning conflict resolution using a tool called the Peace Path, which is designed to help students become more independent when solving problems. Through the program, students are learning that conflict is part of daily life and can be addressed respectfully. They learn to use “I” statements and how to listen, cooperate, compromise and create plans together. The path is a physical activity, encouraging both verbal and nonverbal communication skills. Students who disagree stand face-to-face at the start of the path and move step-by-step along the guided path using the skills they learned in class until they reach a resolution. The steps along the path include cooling off, talking, listening, brainstorming, agreeing and treating each other with respect.
