Weather Eye: Clear, sunny skies for Veterans Day; colder temps creeping in

First off, I want to give a big thank you to all of our veterans for their great service to our country. On this Veterans Day, we honor those that served their county and gave so much. The weather will also honor you with clear and sunny skies.

Easterly winds began blowing through The Gorge yesterday, and gusts up to 50 mph or more were expected today. So, if you live out in the eastern portions of the county, it may feel more like winter than fall.

Vancouver had their first freezing temperature — 32 degrees — Thursday morning. The first sub-freezing temperature was early Friday morning at 30 degrees. I had a few reports out in the county of lows in the 20s and a cold 22 degrees near Moulton Falls.

We mentioned things were going to start changing this coming week with the first weak weather system moving through Tuesday night and Wednesday. Lots of clouds but little rain this far south. A stronger storm later in the week will gather strength and maybe bring a quarter inch of rain on Friday. Then, we may enter into a progressive weather pattern Thanksgiving week with wetter storms.

I mentioned the other day Vancouver was running about eight degrees above normal for the month. Well, thanks to freezing temperatures and highs around 50, we now are less than two degrees above average. I saw some Vancouver folks in shorts and T-shirts on Friday, while others were bundled up with jackets and gloves. Only here, right?

Enjoy the weather today, thank a veteran and maybe get the house exterior decorated for the holidays while it’s halfway warm and dry. That way, you’ll be ready to flip the switch after Thanksgiving!
