The Clark College women’s soccer team shut out its 13th opponent this season to reach another milestone.
The Penguins will play for their first Northwest Athletic Conference women’s soccer championship after beating Tacoma 1-0 on Friday at Starfire Complex in Tukwila.
Clark (14-1-1) has outscored opponents 57-1 while making its run through the NWAC.
Freshman Natalie Paul scored Friday off an assist from sophomore Sarah Teubner in the 38th minute to give the Penguins all the offense they would need.
The defense provided the shutout. Sophomore goalkeeper Maggie Higgins made four saves.
Clark was credited with 15 shots, eight on goal.
One more mountain needs to be climbed and that happens Sunday in the championship against Peninsula of Port Angeles.
In a rematch of last season’s NWAC championship, the Pirates beat Highline 1-0 in Friday’s second semifinal to reach their seventh final in the last eight years.
Peninsula (18-2-1) was runner-up last year to Highline, and beat Highline in 2016 for the NWAC title. The Pirates also won back-to-back in 2012 and 2013.
The final is 1:30 p.m. at Starfire. The match will be streamed live at nwacsports.org.
Volleyball
The Penguins are hosting an NWAC Tournament play-in match at 1 p.m. today at the O’Connell Sports Center against Clackamas.
Both teams finished 8-6 in the NWAC South region, tied for fourth place. The top four teams in each of the four NWAC regions advance to the postseason tournament.
Clackamas beat Clark on its floor in five games on Oct. 5, and Clark posted a 3-1 win in Vancouver last Friday to split the season.
The 16-team NWAC Tournament runs Nov. 15-18 at the Greater Tacoma Convention Center.
Cross country
Clark runners will be taking part in the NWAC Championships today at Saint Martin’s University in Lacey.
The men’s 8K race begins at 11 a.m. followed by the women’s 5K race at noon.
Clark freshman Micah Goff, a Union High grad, and freshman Calvin DuBois, a La Center grad, have been the top runners for the Penguins this season.
The Clark women have just four runners so they won’t figure into the team scoring. Freshman Nicky Figueras, a Ridgefield High grad, has been the top runner.
