The first-year trial seems to be a success.

At least that was the feeling of many members of the seeding committees that set the brackets for the state football tournaments on Sunday.

“I guess that this point I couldn’t be happier,” Greg Whitmore told the Seattle Times. The Lind-Ritzville athletic director was the head of the seeding committee. “You go into these, and you don’t know exactly how it will go. I think all three committees did a great job.”

Locally, I’m not sure there were many complaints. As expected, Union and Hockinson drew No. 1 seeds at Class 4A and 2A respectively. Mountain View, expected to pick up a top-4 seed at 3A, earned a No. 3 seed.

Top-4 seeds are lined up to host both first-round games and quarterfinals. So, good news for Clark County football fans.

If Union wins, the Titans would host the winner of Bothell and Chiawana next week. Hockinson would face the winner of Steilacoom and Sequim. Mountain View would host the winner of Lincoln and Rainier Beach.

Skyview drew a No. 15 seed at 4A. While the Storm might have preferred a high seed, they are one of two four-loss teams in the bracket. The other is Skyline.

Stevenson drew a No. 14 seed at 1A despite a 7-1 record and Trico League title.

But the Bulldogs’ seeding was held down by a non-league schedule that included two small Oregon schools that finished with losing records – Irrigon (4-5) and Corbett (1-8) – plus a Canadian team playing its first varsity game. Also, losses by Trico League rivals La Center and Columbia-White Salmon didn’t help the Bulldogs.
