In a winner-to-state game, the Hockinson girls soccer team would set the tone and take control for most of the match with an aggressive offense.
Ellie Seekins and Alyssa Pfaender scored goals and the Hockinson defense did the rest in a 2-0 win over Black Hills in the third-place match of the 2A district girls tournament on Saturday.
The win will send Hockinson, the 2A Greater St. Helens League champion, to state as the No. 2 seed from District 4. The Hawks will travel to open the 2A state tournament on either Tuesday or Wednesday and face District 1/2 No. 2 (King’s or Overlake).
The Hawks were led by freshman Grace Abbott, sophomores Seekins and Pfaender, as well as junior Brooke Grosz in the offensive charge which totaled up 19 shots and nine of which were on goal.
The Hawks moved the ball around well, having 11 players take shots on the Wolves defense and continually putting pressure on them.
The two goals the Hawks had would come by from 20 yards out assisted by Abbott in the first half, and an unassisted 15 yard goal by Pfaender in the second half.
The Hawks were able to get in and stay inside Black Hills’ goalbox for the majority of the possessions they had, putting pressure on the Wolves goalkeeper Ell Brown.
Brown would end the game with seven total saves, and a few critical ones that would keep Black Hills within reach of Hockinson.
The Wolves who were led by Madison Klinger and Anna Zeldenrust, started to gain momentum in the second half, charging in Hockinson’s goalbox on a few possessions and getting six total shots off with three being on goal.
However, the Hawks’ keeper Madison Perry would cut their drive off, allowing Hockinson to secure the lead throughout the entirety of the game.
