Fire damaged two units at a Salmon Creek apartment complex late Monday, affecting two adults and a child, according to Clark County Fire District 6.

Firefighters were dispatched shortly before midnight Monday to a fire at the Willow Pointe apartment complex at 13717 N.W. Second Ave.

“Residents in Clark County were almost able to mark Memorial Day without a large fire — but not quite,” the fire district said in a release.

The blaze appears to have ignited on the balcony of a second story apartment, and it was spreading to the third floor when firefighters arrived, the release said.

Three fire engines, one squad and a battalion chief responded to the apartments due to the large size of the building. Vancouver Fire Department and Clark County Fire & Rescue assisted in the response.

The crews quickly extinguished the fire. No one was hurt or injured, according to the fire district.

Deputy Clark County Fire Marshal Susan Anderson said the damage on the balcony where the fire is believed to have started was too severe to determine the fire’s cause with certainty, but she was unable to rule out that it may have been ignited by a malfunctioning compact freezer.

Anderson estimated the fire caused $506,000 damage to the building, and about $569,000 worth of personal contents were also lost.

In addition to the two apartments damaged by fire, one downstairs unit was damaged by water.

American Red Cross Cascades Region personnel went to the scene around 12:30 a.m. The nonprofit said it was helping two adults, a child and four pets.
