Downtown Vancouver was awash with red, white and blue Monday, as runners gathered at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Plaza for the annual Race to Remember.

Participants ran from the plaza down the Columbia River trail, where the first half mile, the Honor Mile, was adorned with American flags and photos of fallen service members.

Vancouver nonprofit Race to Remember — which Claudia Cardenas founded in 2009 after her fiance, 20-year Army veteran Jason Vinyard, died — hosts three races every year. The organization also works with local businesses to serve area veterans, and coordinates other events to honor fallen military service members, like building miliary care packages.

The annual Memorial Day Race to Remember features a 5K, 10K and half-marathon. About 150 runners participated.
