The Port of Vancouver Board of Commissioners on Tuesday approved building a new trail segment along Northwest Lower River Road.

The new path, one-third of a mile in length, will stretch from the port’s administrative offices to the offices of Farwest Steel, 3703 N.W. Gateway Ave. It will connect with existing trail segments, the port said.

Per the decision, the port will pay Keystone Contracting Inc., of Ridgefield, $880,300 for the work. A Federal Highway Administration grant will cover $500,000 of that.

Construction will start in June, port officials said Friday, and should be complete by early 2019.
