1. Flyin’ high

Aviation fans can climb into the cockpit of a vintage aircraft to get a pilot’s eye view during the annual Open Cockpit Day from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 26 at Pearson Field Education Center, 201A East Reserve St., Vancouver; free. Historic planes will be on display, and visitors can “fly” using the Real Flight simulator program. There will also be a vertical wind table, glider-building station and the flight simulator lab. The Young Eagles Program of EAA Chapter 105 will sponsor free airplane rides for youth ages 8 to 17, with written permission from parents or guardians. Rides will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis, weather permitting. 360-992-1815 or fortvan.org

2. Out for a walk

Just as runners might like to change their running routes, dogs may like variety in their walks. The Bark Ranger Walking Tour at 10 a.m. May 26 is a great opportunity for your pooch to pad into new territory on historic grounds at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, 1001 E. Fifth St., Vancouver; free. This ranger-led outdoor walking tour, designed for visitors and their dogs, will highlight history at Fort Vancouver and the Vancouver Barracks, as well as the overall history of the site. Rangers will also explain how to explore the park safely with dogs. The tour will return on June 23, July 28 and Aug. 25. Participating dogs should be up-to-date on vaccines and friendly with other dogs and people. Please bring waste bags, any food and water your pup will need, and a leash no longer than 6 feet. In case of inclement weather, the outdoor tour may be canceled. 360-816-6255 or nps.gov/fova

3. Street musical

Mountain View High School will close out the academic year with productions of “42nd Street” at 7 p.m. May 25 and 26 at the high school, 1500 S.E. Blairmont Drive, Vancouver; $8 to $10. Enjoy the Broadway classic with songs such as “Shuffle Off To Buffalo,” “We’re In The Money” and the titular tune “42nd Street.” There’s singing, tap dancing galore and too many costume changes to count. 360-604-6100

4. Back on track(s)

The season of spring railroading returns with the Chelatchie Prairie Railroad Late Spring Excursions at noon and 2:30 p.m. May 26 and 27 at Chelatchie Prairie Railroad, 207 N. Railroad Ave., Yacolt; $16, $15 for seniors, $11 for youth, $9 for ages 2 to 4. The diesel train carries passengers to the Heisson area, through the tunnel and across the east fork of the Lewis River with a stop at Moulton Station to visit Yacolt Falls. 360-686-3559 or bycx.com

5. Run it back

In case you missed last week’s Run to Remember in honor of the military, you’re still in luck as there’s another opportunity over Memorial Day weekend. Participate in A Race to Remember from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 28 at VFW Memorial Plaza, 324 Phil Arnold Way, Vancouver; $35 to $55. Runs/walks include a virtual race, a 1-mile race, a 5K, a 10K and a half-marathon. active.com/vancouver-wa/running/distance-running-races/race-to-remember-memorial-day-2018
