East Vancouver — May 4 has become an unofficial “Star Wars” holiday here on Earth, and on May 4, creatures from around the galaxy visited Shahala Middle School for a celebration of the film series and reading.

Students and families participated in the school’s Readcon event, which promoted reading with Comic Con-like activities, crafts, games, comics and trivia connected to “Star Wars” and other science fiction and fantasy favorites.

Local high school students helped guests learn about and operate robotic devices and gave presentations on some of the science used in science fiction works in a display area titled “Where Real Science Meets Sci-Fi.”

The event also featured visitors from the official 501st Legion of professional costumers dressed up in “Star Wars” gear, who posted for photos.
