Fishing report, May 17

Columbia River angling for summer steelhead and spring Chinook jacks is now open between Tongue Point and the I-5 Bridge.

Angling for shad will be open from Buoy 10 upstream to Bonneville Dam.

White sturgeon retention is open from Buoy 10 upstream to Wauna powerlines on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from May 14 through June 4.

White sturgeon retention is closed from Wauna powerlines upstream to McNary Dam but remains an option for catch and release fishing. Anglers are reminded that spawning sanctuaries are in effect.

The McNary Pool is open to the retention of legal white sturgeon through July 31.

Walleye angling is good in The Dalles Pool and excellent in the John Day Pool.

Salmon, Steelhead

Cowlitz River from I-5 Bridge downstream — 199 bank rods kept one steelhead and released one adult Chinook and one steelhead; 49 boat rods kept three adult Chinook.

Cowlitz River upstream from the I-5 Bridge — 133 bank rods kept 18 adult and one jack Chinook and one steelhead; 34 boat rods kept three adult Chinook and three steelhead.

Kalama River — 92 bank anglers kept two adult and one jack Chinook and two steelhead and released one steelhead; 51 boat anglers kept seven adult Chinook and 1one steelhead.

Mainstem Lewis River — Five bank rods and one boat angler had no catch.

North Fork Lewis River — 29 bank rods kept one adult Chinook; six boat rods kept one adult Chinook.

Lower Wind River — 15 bank rods kept one adult Chinook; 683 boat rods kept 184 adult and eight jack Chinook and released seven adult Chinook and one steelhead.

Upper Wind River — One bank angler had no catch.

Drano Lake — 39 bank rods kept two adult Chinook; 697 boat rods kept 230 adult and two jack Chinook and released 11 adult Chinook.

Klickitat River — 25 bank anglers kept two adult Chinook.

Willamette River spring Chinook

According to guide Jack Glass of Team Hook-up Guide Service, the Willamette River has been giving up some nice catches of spring Chinook,but fishing has been spotty. He reports that some days are good but other days are slow.

He also reminds anglers that late May and June can be excellent for Willamette springers.

“For those that can hold on fishing in late May and June can be real good,” he said. Glass also notes that the hot spot for last year’s late catches was the Portland Harbor.

Trout

Trout fishing has been “on fire” in all of the Southwest Washington lowland lakes.

Lacamas Lake — Anglers continue to catch largemouth bass up to 6 pounds, and a bass over 9 pounds was taken this last week.

Merwin Lake — Fishing for kokanee has been fair, but is improving

Yale Lake — Kokanee fishing has been good.

Mayfield Lake — Anglers are catching some nice tiger muskies.

Walleye

The Dalles Pool — Weekly checking showed no catch for one bank angler; and 11 walleye kept for three boats (10 anglers).

John Day Pool — Weekly checking showed 224 walleye kept, plus 12 walleye released for 43 boats (114 anglers).
