Washington State Patrol responded to the reports of an injury on state Highway 14 on Tuesday morning.

No drivers had crashed their vehicles. Instead, troopers found a bald eagle walking around on or near the highway.

According to emergency radio traffic monitored at The Columbian, dispatchers told law enforcement that people had gathered around the injured bird, which was walking around on its feet and appeared unable to fly. The scanner traffic about the bird broadcasted about 9:30 a.m.

Troopers reported over the scanner that the eagle had been hit by a vehicle, but Trooper Will Finn said how the bird was injured remains unknown, as do the extent of its injuries.

“It refused to give us a statement,” Finn said.

Passers-by guided the eagle off to the shoulder of the eastbound lanes of the highway near Southeast Ellsworth Road. A trooper called the area Audubon Society to pick up and care for the bird, Finn said.
