A fire destroyed a fifth-wheel motor home parked in a carport attached to a residence north of Felida on Sunday morning.

Clark County Fire District 6 firefighters were dispatched to 4817 N.W. 151st St. about 9:45 a.m.

The crew of the first fire engine to arrive at the one-story home found the RV parked on the right side underneath a carport, engulfed in flames, said Fire District 6 spokesman Dave Schmitke.

Firefighters removed an attached truck from the camper and began dousing the blaze with foam, Schmitke said.

Smoke filled the home’s garage, but firefighters used fans to clear it and a junk room of the haze. The home survived the fire undamaged, Schmitke said, but he was unsure if the carport was destroyed. He estimated damage was around $57,000.

No one was injured by the fire.

The homeowner told responders he plugged batteries located in the carport into an outside electrical outlet. About a half-hour later, he heard a loud pop come from the batteries, and a fire quickly grew out of control, Schmitke said.

The Clark County Fire Marshal was called in to investigate the exact cause.

Firefighters remained on the scene for about 2½ hours, removing several panels from the side of the home to ensure there weren’t lingering hot spots.
