A Vancouver woman is suing Vancouver Public Schools, alleging the district failed to protect her from a foul ball that came hurtling toward her at a baseball game last year.

Adeline Pechman, 88, was attending the 40th annual Southwest Washington Senior All-Star Baseball Series in May 2017 at Propstra Stadium at Hudson’s Bay High School in the Vancouver school district, according to the lawsuit filed Wednesday.

Pechman was sitting in the front row directly behind home plate, when a foul ball came “either through a gap at the bottom of a permanent fence, or through a dilapidated and insufficient safety netting,” and struck her in the right lower leg, according to the lawsuit.

The district, according to the suit, failed to protect Pechman and other spectators behind home plate, “needlessly endangering Ms. Pechman’s safety and the safety of the other spectators.”

Pechman is suing for damages, including all medical and out-of-pocket expenses for the “severe injury” she suffered.

Pechman’s attorney, Vancouver personal injury lawyer Gregory Price, could not be reached for comment Thursday. Vancouver Public Schools declined to comment on the pending litigation.
