Hudson’s Bay was already locked into the 3A Greater St. Helens League third seed entering Thursday evening, so the Eagles just had one goal.

Spoil Evergreen’s league title celebration.

Instead, the Eagles just delayed it a bit.

Bay scored in the opening minute and nearly put in the game-winner in the final minute as Bay and Evergreen tied 2-2 at McKenzie Stadium.

The Plainsmen were looked to clinch the league title with a win. Instead, they did it with a tie when Mountain View lost 2-1 at Kelso two hours later.

“We definitely stepped up,” Bay senior forward Julio Vaya said. “There were a couple of missed opportunities that we could have had, but that’s every game.”

Bay forward Nicholas Campbell scored the game’s opening goal, and nearly the game-decider.

With 30 seconds left, and the game tied 2-2, Campbell received a through ball on a breakaway creating a one-on-one between him and the goalkeeper. He volleyed the ball into the back of the net, and made contact with the goalie after his follow-through, which the center referee ruled a foul, and with it, the goal was called back.

Evergreen forward Levan Zhividze said they dug a hole by giving away the early goal.

“I thought we fought back well. Every time they scored we fought back strong,” Plainsmen midfielder Elijah Lavin said. “And we really wanted to push for it. We were down their throats the rest of the second half and overtime.”

2A district play-in

In 2A, Washougal earned a district tournament berth by winning its play-in game Thursday, 4-1, over Centralia at Tiger Stadium in Lewis County.

The Panthers (5-12-1) face undefeated and top-seeded Columbia River (16-0) at 5 p.m. Saturday at Kiggins Bowl to begin the double-elimination portion of the tournament.

Washougal had a 2-0 halftime lead on goals by Nick Erickson and Ayden West. West later assisted the team’s first goal of the second half from Antonio Reyes.

West and Jamison Wright had a goal and assist apiece Thursday. Wright’s goal made it 4-1.

Max Wright, the team’s freshman goalkeeper, made five saves.
