Firefighters and disaster responders helped a vehicle owner Thursday night in Hazel Dell after his engine ignited into flames, injuring one person.

Clark County Fire District 6 responded to the vehicle fire shortly after 8 p.m. in the 7300 block of Northeast 13th Avenue. Firefighters quickly quashed the blaze with a chemical extinguisher, Fire District 6 spokesman Dave Schmitke said.

The vehicle owner told fire personnel he had been recently having car trouble, and when he started his vehicle, the engine ignited into flames. A friend who was with him burned her arm and used a personal vehicle to go to a hospital, Schmitke said.

The vehicle owner had been living in his car, which held all of his belongings. Schmitke said Fire District 6 donated some money to assist the owner with any immediate needs.

Red Cross Cascades Region personnel also responded to the scene about 30 minutes later to assist, according to a press release.

Schmitke said the Clark County Fire Marshal’s Office ruled the fire accidental. The owner had the vehicle towed.
