Ridgefield School District explores African American culture in honor of Black History Month

Ridgefield — In honor of Black History Month, Ridgefield School District students spent February exploring African Americans’ experiences, culture and contributions to American history. Students around the district studied various figures and events throughout the Civil Rights movement, as well as people who made major impacts on society, such as Henrietta Lacks, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Billie Holiday. Ridgefield High School art students learned about African face jugs, a pottery style transported to America from Africa through the slave trade, and students created their own versions inspired by the traditional mugs.
