Washougal City Councilor Dan Coursey resigned his position this week.
In an email to Mayor Molly Coston and City Administrator David Scott, Coursey announced his resignation will be effective March 31, as first reported by the Camas-Washougal Post Record.
“I have considerable professional business opportunities which are taking up more of my time now and more so in the future,” Coursey wrote in his resignation letter. “So, I am resigning my city council seat to better take advantage of that and allow another to serve our wonderful city. Both I and my wife love our little city and look forward to assisting in the future as time allows.”
He works as a computer network and systems engineer. Coursey was elected to the council in 2015, and ran for mayor of Washougal in 2017, losing the election to Coston. He finished with 42.09 percent of the vote to Coston’s 53.94 percent.
Applications for Coursey’s seat opened on Friday and will close April 13, according to Scott. Interviews of applicants and an appointment of a replacement is scheduled for April 23 at the city council meeting. The position will then be part of the 2019 primary and general election. The person appointed to Coursey’s seat will serve until the 2019 election. The elected term expires at the end of 2023.
