Community notebook: Camas fifth graders win middle school basketball title

A fifth-grade girls basketball team representing the Camas Papermakers won the gold division of the Washington Middle School Basketball Championship, held March 16-18 at Spokane.

Camas went 4-0 in pool play. The Papermakers defeated Lake Washington Purple 37-28, Skyline Silver 31-14, Inglemoor Vikings 37-20, and Bothell 28-26.

In the championship on Sunday, Camas defeated the Woodinville Lady Falcons 33-22.

Team members included Lauren Bachelder, Sophie Buzzard, Carli Christensen, Stephanie Edwards, Aubrey Hall, Kendall Mairs, Bridget Quinn, Keirra Thompson, and Alexis Waldbauer. Coaches were Scott Thompson and Tad Mairs.

There were 10 teams in this age group.

Spring break tennis camps at Evergreen

Evergreen Tennis is hosting Spring Break tennis camps April 2-6 at the indoor facility located at 5225 N.W. 38th Ave. in Camas.

Sign up by March 25 for early bird pricing.

Age groups are Quickstart (ages 5-7), EasyStart (7-10), Student (9-up), and Teen Beginners (13-up). There are also groups for competitors and high performance players.

Harlem Wizards coming to Union High

The Harmony Elementary PTA is hosting a basketball game against the Harlem Wizards at 7 p.m. April 18 at Union High School.

Advance tickets are on sale now at https://harlemwizards.thundertix.com/events/123975.

General admission is $15, student $10. Reserved seats close to the court are $25 and includes a team poster, or $35 for courtside plus ticket that includes a meet-and-greet with the players.

Tickets at the door will be $17 adults, $12 students.

High school rugby season kicks off

The high school rugby season got underway last weekend with three local teams getting season-opening wins.

The Battle Ground Bulls traveled to Bend, Ore., where they defeated Summit High 35-0. Colin Friese had a try and was six for eight on kicking conversions. Brock Robinson added two tries.

The Prairie Wolf Pack hosted the Portland Pumas, last year’s Oregon state champs, at Lauren Middle School. Prairie prevailed 39-12 after jumping to a 29-0 halftime lead. Derek Kofoed was named man of the match.

The Clark County Cyclones girls team opened its season with a 55-12 win over Newberg, Ore. Paige Fallon and Apoliui Atuaia were players of the match.

Adult baseball league set for tryouts

Players 35 and over are invited to try out for the Vancouver-based Southwest Washington Adult Baseball League.

There is a league for 35 and over as well as 45 and over. The tryouts will be held on Sunday, March 25, 1-3 p.m., at The Lumber Yard, at 4212 NE Minnehaha St. Players of all skill levels are welcome.
