The Oregon Food Bank has issued a recall of more than 22,000 pounds of chia seeds distributed at food banks and pantries throughout Oregon and Clark County.
The seeds donated to the Oregon Food Bank by Live Local Organic of Milwaukie, Ore., may be contaminated with rodent droppings. No known illnesses have been associated with the seeds, but use or consumption may present a health hazard, according to a news release from the food bank.
The seeds were distributed through the Oregon Food Bank Network of regional food banks and pantries. The product was distributed in 1 pound plastic poly film bags with a twist-type closure or a re-sealable pouch. All seeds distributed between Nov. 1 and March 9 are included in the recall.
The issue was discovered through an investigation of a consumer complaint. Product still in inventory at the food bank was determined to contain rodent droppings. Subsequent investigation showed evidence of rodent activity at the donor’s facility.
