Portland – Thinking of going into the National Forest for the Fourth of July? Leave the fireworks at home, officials say.

Fireworks are banned in national forests at all times. Violators can be subject to a fine up to $5,000 and/or up to six months in jail. Additionally, anyone who starts a wildfire can be held liable for suppression costs.

Visitors should also be safe with campfires, which are the number one cause of wildfires on public lands.

Know of any fire restrictions in the areas you plan to visit. Keep fires away from flammable material. Keep water and a shovel nearby. Bes sure fires are completely extinguished and cold to the touch before leaving a campsite.
