Weather Eye: Despite recent showers, conditions are still very dry in our area

Keep watering your lawns and gardens folks if you want green and a harvest, as there likely won’t be any soaking rain any time soon. Yes, we had some light showers Monday with a weak weather system, but as of 5 p.m. Monday only .03 of an inch fell in Vancouver.

In fact, it has been really dry since mid-April, with the total rainfall from then through Monday at 1.17 inches. Only .14 of an inch fell in May. These amounts were recorded at Pearson Field off Highway 14. Some of you may have had a soaker with a passing thunderstorm in the past week or two, but things still remain on the dry side. Look at the fields and grasses along roadways, more like mid- to late summer.

Already wildfires are burning in Central Oregon, probably lightning caused. Some of that smoke over the weekend actually drifted our way with light offshore winds, which also helped push us to our fifth 90-degree day Sunday.

Looking ahead we will have a westerly flow with cooler ocean air and a few weak troughs of low pressure moving through. Most showers will remain to the coast and our north, but we could see some light shower activity similar to Monday in the Thursday-through-Sunday timeframe. It certainly doesn’t look like July is arriving with blasting heat on Sunday.

Longer-range weather models show clouds, chance of showers and seasonal temperatures right through the Fourth of July.

Expect some cloudiness at times, some sunny periods and a chance of a shower later in the week and highs of mostly 70-75 through the weekend.
