Food & Drink: Paper Tiger opens new drive-thru a stone’s throw away

Paper Tiger Coffee Roasters recently took over the coffee kiosk on the corner of Mill Plain Boulevard and Grand Boulevard (formerly Pines Coffee and then Jenna Coffee). Kenny Fletcher, Paper Tiger’s owner, had his eye on that kiosk for five years, since he took over Paper Tiger’s coffee shop just down the street at the corner of Grand and Evergreen boulevards.
After the kiosk’s recent vacancy, Fletcher heard rumors that a coffee chain had approached the landlord, so he knew he had to move quickly.
“I managed to find out who the landlord was and had a chat with him that day,” Fletcher said. “I signed paperwork the next day. The landlord confirmed that other chains were looking at it and he said he wanted someone local. I told him we’re local — here’s my shop. I pointed right down the street to him.”
Getting the dual-sided drive-up ready for business was fairly simple. Inside, Fletcher added a new grinder and espresso machine, and reorganized the shelving. The landlord had just installed an under-the-counter three-door refrigerator. On the outside, Fletcher added a new coat of paint, ordered some Paper Tiger logos and made his own colorful signs — a coffee cup on a bright tiger-orange background.
PTCR (as Fletcher likes to call the coffee kiosk because it’s an abbreviated version of his shop) carries a shorter menu because of its limited space. House coffee and espresso drinks (cappuccino, Americano, latte, mocha, macchiato and con panna), chai (spicy and regular), hot cocoa, and soda (Coca-Cola, San Pellegrino, and Italian soda) are available. Four types of tea are offered: green, black, Earl Grey, and berry rooibos.
Drinks are available in 12- or 16-ounce sizes. The kiosk also has cinnamon rolls from Rosycakes Bakery and biscotti from Killa Bites.
You can also buy bags of coffee beans (Chati, Tiger Stripe and decaf.)
You may see Fletcher making drinks at PTCR. He keeps an eye on the place and steps in when necessary.
In addition to an abbreviated menu, the hours at the kiosk are shorter than those at the coffee shop. The kiosk hours are 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekends. If you need your Paper Tiger fix when the kiosk is closed, go down Grand to the coffee shop, which is open 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekends.
