Washougal — Each month, Hathaway Elementary School students participate in a “character challenge,” and March’s theme was demonstrating compassion for others. To do that, the students participated in a monthlong fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The was the school’s first year doing a fundraiser for the society, and the school goal was to raise $1,200, Principal Sarika Mosley said in a release from the district. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade ended up raising $2,392. A kindergarten class raised the most funds with $588, and was awarded an Olive Garden lunch courtesy of the society. A second-grade class finished second, and had a root beer float party, and the first-grade class that came in third received Otter Pops on a hot day in May.
