Cardinals stay alive, Mavericks lose first at Legion state tourney

The Vancouver Cardinals stayed alive at the Washington American Legion AAA state tournament, while the Vancouver Mavericks were handed their first loss on Monday.

The Cardinals eliminated the Kennewick Outlaws 8-4 at W.F. West High School in Chehalis.

Ryan Pitts and Brannan Meriwether each had three hits for the Cardinals. Pitts had a triple and drove in three runs, while Meriwether had a double and two RBI.

Michael Hickey was 2 for 3 with a double and RBI, and Riley Buehler was 2 for 3 with two doubles.

The Cardinals will face undefeated Skagit Sox of Mount Vernon at 7 p.m. Tuesday at W.F. West. The Cardinals need to win to stay alive in the tournament.

After scoring 11 runs in their first two games, the Mavericks were held to four runs Monday in a 6-4 loss to Lakeside Recovery of Bellevue at Wheeler Field in Centralia.

The Mavericks had 13 hits, but stranded 10 runners on base. Josh Mansur, Andrew Gulliford, Riley McCarthy, Mason Hill and Grant Heiser each had two hits.

The Mavericks will face Hanford Flames at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Wheeler Field. The loser of this game is eliminated.
