The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and the Southwest Clean Air Agency issued an air pollution advisory Tuesday for Vancouver due to elevated levels of ozone pollution, or smog.
According to a joint press release, the advisory is expected to continue through Thursday. If the high temperatures and low winds continue, it may result in an extended advisory.
Officials urge residents to limit driving by carpooling or using alternative forms of transportation, avoiding unnecessary engine idling, refueling vehicles during cooler evening hours, refraining from using gas-powered mowers or yard equipment and not using paint or aerosol sprays.
Smog can irritate the eyes, nose and lungs, contribute to breathing problems and reduce lung function. Consult a health care provider if these symptoms arise.
Pollution levels tend to be highest during the afternoon and early evening. DEQ and health officials recommend children, pregnant women, asthma sufferers, those with lung or heart conditions and adults age 65 and older limit their outdoor activity.
