ICE protesters warned to disband

PORTLAND — Portland’s mayor has warned protesters camping at the office of the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency to disband before they are removed by police.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reports Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler said Monday that protesters should peacefully disengage because although he supports their cause he believes the demonstration is no longer sustainable.

A camp sweep notice says people have until Tuesday to leave voluntarily.

The notice says those who remain may face citation or arrest.

The activists who have been protesting at a building leased by ICE since June 17 want to abolish ICE and end the Trump administration’s zero-tolerance immigration policy.

The office closed temporarily because protesters blocked its entrances and several demonstrators were detained and charged with misdemeanors when federal police moved to reopen it.
