Weather Eye: Another heat wave is here, so the coast is the place to be this week

Saturday afternoon, the weather was picture perfect for mid-July. At 5 p.m., the temperature in Vancouver and surrounding areas was at or near 80 degrees, just about average for the date. I certainly hope you enjoyed it as we go back to the hot stuff today.

The National Weather Service in Portland issued an excessive-heat watch for our area for Monday and Tuesday. Today we push into the mid-90s, and Monday I wouldn’t be surprised to see the high of 100 degrees, but it will probably stop at 99 degrees for a teaser. Mid-90s on Tuesday, then we’re at or slightly above 90 degrees the rest of the week.

We already have 11 days this year with highs of 90 degrees or better, so if we do see highs of 90 degrees or above today through Friday, that would make a total of 17 days. We usually see 13 or 14 days of 90-degree weather each summer.

In 2015, we chalked up 25 days of highs of 90 degrees or better. Remember that hot summer? With extended outlooks looking drier and warmer than normal, we could come close to that record of 25 days. We still have August and early September to achieve that.

There will be no escaping the heat wave this week unless you remain in an air-conditioned building or head for the Washington or Oregon coast. There the weather will be refreshing with plenty of sunshine and highs in the 65- to 75-degree range. The coast will be the place to be this week if you are lucky enough to head out of town.

On Thursday, it was only 71 degrees for a high — some 10 degrees below average. That was a fluke that won’t be repeated any time soon.
