LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles FC continued its impressive run in the 2018 U.S. Open Cup in its debut season, defeating the Portland Timbers 3-2 at Banc of California Stadium on Wednesday night in the quarterfinal round.
This was Portland’s first loss after a 14-game unbeaten streak across all competition.
On Sunday, the Timbers (8-4-6) became the first team this season to shut out LAFC at its home stadium in a 0-0 tie.
While the opening 30 minutes of Wednesday’s match continued the scoring drought, the teams really made up for lost time after that.
Portland’s David Guzman opened the scoring for the other team, an own goal off an LAFC free kick in the 33rd minute. Carlos Vela scored five minutes later for a 2-0 LAFC lead.
