The Clark County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office’s review into the death of a La Center man who died while in custody in mid-May is ongoing, as is the county medical examiner’s investigation into the cause of his death.

The man, identified as Travis Craig Avery, 36, died after Clark County sheriff’s deputies took him into custody May 13. He was arrested that evening following a domestic violence call in the 8700 block of Sorenson Road, between Woodland and Amboy.

Avery resisted arrest, the sheriff’s office said, and after he was taken into custody, he began to complain of difficulty breathing.

An ambulance responded, but Avery was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Fred Neiman said the Vancouver Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit, which reviewed the incident, passed its investigation on to the prosecutor’s office.

The Clark County Medical Examiner’s final report on Avery’s cause and manner of death is still pending.

The deputies involved, Scott Kirgiss and Forrest Cook, were placed on administrative leave for part of the investigation and have since returned to their regular duties, Neiman said.
