An early-morning fire at a Battle Ground house displaced two people Wednesday.

Firefighters with Clark County Fire District 3 were dispatched about 1:32 a.m. to 2511 N.W. 12th St., according to emergency logs.

Battalion Chief Sean Smith said responding firefighters arrived to find flames coming from the roof of the two-story home.

“It appeared that the fire started on the exterior and then got up in the attic,” he said.

The fire didn’t do much interior damage, beyond the attic, he said, but it still rendered the home uninhabitable.

The city fire marshal estimated the blaze caused about $40,000 in damage. The fire is suspected to have been caused by improper ash disposal.

Fire personnel reminded residents wood ash can retain enough heat to ignite combustible materials for several days, and to be sure to properly dispose and douse ashy material.

Disaster responders were on scene to help two residents about a half-hour after the blaze, according to a news release from the Red Cross.

Fire District 3 was also assisted by Clark County Fire and Rescue, AMR, the Battle Ground Police Department and Clark Public Utilities.
