The Vancouver Mavericks American Legion baseball team finished the Curt Daniels Invitational on a high note, beating the Southridge Bandits 7-1 on Sunday at Concordia University in Portland.
The Mavericks scored five runs in the third inning, all with two outs.
Jordan Donohoe and Jasper Rank each hit a run-scoring double, and Jensen Bowen had an RBI single. The other runs scored on a fielder’s choice and an error.
The Mavericks put two more runs on the board in the fifth on an error and an RBI single by Rank.
Chad Stoner, Samuel Malychewski and Andrew Seldon combined on a two-hitter for the Mavericks, who went 2-3 in the Blue Pool of six teams.
The Vancouver Cardinals American Legion squad lost their tournament finale 12-2 to the Spokane Dodgers at Columbia River High School to finish 1-4 in the Red Pool of six teams.
Both Cardinals runs were scored in the first inning on an outfield error on a ball hit by Brannan Meriwether.
The tournament semifinals and final are Monday at Columbia River.
Boys of Summer from Bellevue takes on Seattle Stars in the 10 a.m. semifinal, followed by Taylor Baseball of Seattle — the only team to win all five of its pool-play games — vs. Lakeside Recovery of Bellevue at 12:30 p.m. The championship game is at 3 p.m.
Babe Ruth baseball
Primetime Baseball of Battle Ground, Centerfield Roosters of Ridgefield and Kelso have secured their spots to the 16-18 Babe Ruth regional in Gillette, Wyo., by being the final three teams standing at the Southern Washington state tournament in Centralia.
Primetime beat Roosters 5-4 on Sunday in the semifinal and will face either Kelso or the Rooster again in today’s championship game at Wheeler Field.
Kelso stayed alive with a 7-4 win over Grays Harbor. Kelso plays Roosters at 10 a.m. today with the winner taking on Primetime at 2 p.m.
The top three teams were assured of advancing to regionals in Wyoming. That tournament runs July 19-24 with the winner going on to the Babe Ruth World Series in Jamestown, N.Y., in August.
Little League softball
Kirkland won two games on Sunday to win the major (ages 11-12) state tournament title at Columbia Little League in Vancouver.
Kirkland beat Snohomish twice. The first game was 2-1 in eight innings and then the deciding game was 8-3.
Kirkland advances to the West Regional final in San Bernardino, Calif., with the winner of that tournament to play in the Little League Softball World Series, Aug. 8-15 at Alpenrose Dairy in Portland.
