Local ball: Mavericks, Cardinals fall to 1-4 at Daniels Invite

The Vancouver Mavericks and Vancouver Cardinals were eliminated from championship contention on Saturday in the Curt Daniels Invitational.

Both American Legion squads fell to 1-4 in their respective pools with one day of pool play remaining.

The Mavericks lost to the Seattle Stars 14-4 in five innings Saturday, while the Cardinals lost to Red Pool leader Boys of Summer (Bellevue) 5-0.

For the Mavericks, Jordan Donohoe and Grant Francis each hits a solo home run, and Garrett Moen was 2 for 3 with a double and RBI.

Cooper Barnum was 2 for 3 in the Cardinals’ loss.

The Centerfield Roosters of Ridgefield advanced to the semifinal of the Southern Washington state tournament in Centralia with a 10-0 over Vancouver Quail.

Randy Yeakly pitched the two-hit complete game shutout with eight strikeouts. Derek Harteloo was 2 for 3 with two RBI.

The Roosters will face Primetime at 2 p.m. at Wheeler Field today.

MAJORS (AGES 11-12) — The District 4 tournament began Saturday at Fort Vancouver Little League with Cascade and Fort Vancouver winning the opening games.

The tournament runs through Thursday (Friday, if necessary). The winner advances to state at Sedro-Woolley beginning July 21.

9-11 DISTRICT — Camas won the District 4 tournament for ages 9-11 on Saturday, defeating Evergreen 11-1.

Camas advances to the state tournament at SeaTac, which begins July 14. Salmon Creek won the District 6 title last week.

Little League softball

MAJORS (AGES 11-12) — The last local team in the bracket, District 4 champion Camas, was eliminated from the Major State Tournament, being hosted at Columbia Little League in Vancouver.

Camas lost to Kirkland 16-4 on Saturday.

Kirkland advances to Sunday’s championship game against Snohomish at noon. If Kirkland wins that game, a second title game will be played at 3 p.m.

Camas had lost its opening game of the tournament and then won four elimination games before Saturday’s final loss.
