Vancouver Cardinals, Mavericks win openers at Curt Daniels Invite

The Vancouver Cardinals and Vancouver Mavericks, both American League baseball teams, won their opening games of the Curt Daniels Invitational on Wednesday.

The Cardinals started things off at Columbia River High School with a 10-2 win over Portland Baseball Club.

The Mavericks followed with a 9-3 win over Narrows Baseball Club.

Brannan Meriwether was 3 for 4 with a grand slam and five total RBI in the Cardinals’ victory. Michael Hickey was 2 for 5 with a home run and two RBI, and Camden Ryder was 2 for 3 with two RBI.

Alex Miller struck out 10 in a four-hit complete-game effort.

The Mavericks had a six-run seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie. Andrew Guliford’s hit helped bring home the tiebreaking run.

Jordan Donohoe and Josh Mansur each drove in three runs. Jasper Rank was the winning pitcher and struck out five.

The 12-team tournament continues through the championship round on Monday at Columbia River. Games are also being played at Concordia University in Portland.
